Latest Update
In August 2025, Humanity Foundation reached 60 senior citizens through the Sponsor a Grandparent’s Care program across Nala Sopara and Virar.
Each grandparent received a monthly ration kit, blanket, and basic medicines.
Our volunteers also spent time with them — reading stories, serving tea, and celebrating small joys that made their eyes light up.
One elderly woman, Asha Devi (72), told our team,
“After my husband passed away, I thought no one would ever visit me again. You people became my family.”
Story
In small rented rooms or shanties, many elderly citizens live forgotten — their children gone to cities, or lost to illness, or simply unable to care for them.
Most of these grandparents once worked hard as farmers, daily wage earners, or caregivers. But now, with age and frail health, survival has become a daily challenge.
They spend days alone, struggling for food, medicines, or even a kind word. Some go days without a proper meal, relying on neighbours’ mercy or leftover food.
Humanity Foundation started the Sponsor a Grandparent’s Care initiative to give these elders more than just aid — to give them companionship, respect, and care they deserve.
Challenges the Elderly Face
Elderly individuals in poverty-stricken communities often suffer from:
Lack of regular meals, leaving them malnourished and weak.
Absence of family support or abandonment by children.
Chronic illnesses like diabetes, arthritis, and high blood pressure without access to treatment.
The Support They Should Receive
Every grandparent deserves:
Nutritious food kits and monthly ration support.
Regular medical check-ups and medicines for age-related illnesses.
Clothing, blankets, and hygiene essentials to ensure comfort and cleanliness.
Companionship programs — volunteer visits, reading sessions, and festival celebrations to combat loneliness.
Financial Struggles Families Have
In low-income households, the elderly are often the first to sacrifice their needs.
When money is scarce, buying medicine becomes a luxury, and meals are skipped.
Some elderly women still work as domestic help despite poor health, while men sell small items on streets to survive.
Many live on minimal pensions or none at all. With rising costs and no savings, even ₹1,000 can mean a week’s worth of food or life-saving medicines.
Without external support, these grandparents are forgotten — invisible in the crowd, waiting for a helping hand.
How You Can Help
Your contribution can change their final years into peaceful ones:
₹1,000 provides a month of meals and medicines for one elderly person.
₹5,000 supports five senior citizens with ration kits and basic healthcare.
₹10,000 helps organize a medical and care camp for abandoned elders.
When you sponsor a grandparent’s care, you give them not just food or medicine — you give them companionship, dignity, and a reason to smile again.
